アーティストの魚住英司さん、久保田沙耶さんによる、令和6年度宮城県亘理町地域おこし協力隊 活動集大成特別展示「ほどく unweaving」において、会場デザインおよび展示什器の設計・制作を担当しました。「境界線をほどく」というコンセプトのもと、樹脂を用いた作品やガラス製の砂時計など、繊細で透明感のある作品群によって構成されており、そのコンセプトを空間全体で表現するため、展示什器の構造や素材選定からデザインを検討しました。

展示什器の天板には、梱包時の緩衝材として用いられるポリエチレン発泡体を採用。通常は作品を支える裏方の素材をあえて仕上げ材として使用することで、展示コンセプトである「境界線」の曖昧さや揺らぎを可視化しました。また、ポリカーボネートボードを組み合わせることで、光を透過する軽やかな印象と浮遊感を生み出し、展示空間に圧迫感を与えない構成としています。

さらに、什器内部には照明を組み込み、作品を内側から照らす演出を採用しました。発泡体が内部から柔らかく発光することで、あたかも上部から光が差し込んでいるかのような印象を生み出しています。実際には展示台上部に光源を設けておらず、透明な作品と素材の特性を活かすことで成立した空間表現です。

裏方として扱われる素材と展示作品、光と影、内と外といった複数の境界をゆるやかにほどきながら、会場全体をひとつの作品として体験できる展示空間を目指しました。

本展示は宮城県亘理町役場および神戸URBAN PICNICラウンジの2会場で開催されました。

We were responsible for the exhibition design and the design and fabrication of display fixtures for Unweaving, a special exhibition presenting the culmination of the activities of the FY2024 Watari Town Regional Revitalization Cooperation Team, featuring works by artists Eiji Uozumi and Saya Kubota.

Centered on the concept of “opening boundaries,” the exhibition brought together delicate and transparent works, including resin-based sculptures and glass hourglasses. To embody this concept throughout the space, we developed the exhibition fixtures from the ground up, carefully considering both their structure and material selection.

The fixture tops were constructed using polyethylene foam, a material typically used as protective packaging. By intentionally employing this normally hidden, supporting material as a finished surface, we sought to visualize the ambiguity and fluidity of the exhibition’s theme of boundaries. Polycarbonate panels were also incorporated to create a sense of lightness and transparency, producing a floating quality while avoiding any feeling of visual heaviness within the exhibition space.

Lighting was integrated into the interior of the fixtures, illuminating the artworks from within. The polyethylene foam softly glows when lit internally, creating the impression that light is shining down from above, despite the absence of any light source above the display. This spatial effect was made possible through the unique interaction between the transparent artworks and the materials used in the fixtures.

By gently dissolving boundaries between foreground and background, artwork and display, light and shadow, and interior and exterior, the exhibition space was designed to be experienced as a single, unified work in itself.

The exhibition was presented at two venues: Watari Town Hall in Miyagi Prefecture and the URBAN PICNIC Lounge in Kobe.
